Free Food in Falkirk

by Kev & Althea

Food miles. Increasing food prices. Small gardens and no allotments?yet! You may be surprised to learn what foods you can find in Falkirk, for free - now. At the moment we're enjoying blackcurrant jam, having just finished the raspberries, both collected from neglected bushes in "wild" corners not far from our house. The final bottle of elderflower cordial is waiting to be opened (on the next sunny day), made from flowers picked in our local park, just a 2 minute walk away. Easiest of all are brambles which are close to ripening now (see Teatime Treats for a recipe). But try and pick them away from a busy road so they're not coated in car fumes. This year we might actually get round to making some rowan jelly- watch this space. If you keep you're eyes peeled you might spot the odd stray apple tree with fruits reddening-up now. We've spotted quite a few - their locations are a closely guarded secret! And keep looking when you're on holiday. We've got great memories of finding hazelnuts and walnuts in profusion. Of course, we're not going to tell you where to find this stuff. It tastes better when you find it yourself! And it's all organic.
